This one day course provides refresher training in: the use of radar to maintain situational awareness; the methods used to determine a contact’s range, bearing, CPA, time to CPA, course and speed; and how to determine own ship’s course and speed changes to avoid collision.
The course reviews radar navigation techniques such as taking bearing and ranges and plotting fixes to obtain the ship’s position. It also reviews the Rules of the Road appropriate to the use of radar.
This is a USCG approved course. The student successfully completing this course satisfies the licensing requirements of 46 CFR 10.209, 46 CRF 10.305 (c)(4), and 46 CFR 10.480 for recertification as Radar Observer (Unlimited), and the radar training requirements for Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch on vessels of 500 GT and over.
Each student is provided a package of practice problems prior to the course. These must be completed and brought to the course.
This course is intended for candidates for re-certification of the radar endorsement required for license renewal and STCW endorsement. Mariners enrolling for this course should possess a valid US Coast Guard license with radar endorsement.
Student performance will be evaluated by a practical examination. The exam consists of basic radar navigation position fixing, plotting radar contacts to determine risk of collision, and action taken to avoid collision.
